Devotionals
Do you sometimes feel like a banjo -- always being picked on.?
As I was leading our PraiseTime on Sunday and totally engrossed
in the vibrance of the singing I thought, "When do non-church-
attendees get to sing like this?" They rarely do. Maybe some of
you are like my Godly mother. When she sang in church, you
could see her lips move, but you rarely heard musical sounds. Yet,
in her heart she was probably singing up a storm.
From it's very inception, the church has been a singing church. It's
God's people who get to revel in song and praise God at the same
time. Man, that's pretty neat. That's reason enough to go to a good
church where the singing clears the sinuses!
Remember, however, that the music is just like gift wrap -- the
valuable stuff is on the inside -- the words. Some song texts, both
the old ones and new ones, are pretty weak in theological
depth. Sometimes song writers are willing to use a weak textual
concept in order to get good rhyme. So, if you pick songs for your
church, pick them for the beef instead of the bounce.
The Psalms are loaded with musical references, but we also have
instances in the New Testament, like Eph. 5:19 (nlt), "Then you
will sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves,
making music in your hearts to the Lord." Psalms, hymns, spiritual
songs -- good old Paul, he covered all the music from Greek
Orthodox to Charismatic -- we all have a special song to sing to the
Lord in our own style, and I'm sure God loves it all.
Whatever instrument you play, you have to buy one. But you can
sing for free -- your voice came as part of your basic package, so
use it to praise your maker.
