Healing

This well-worn cocoon
Has protected me well,
Keeping me safe and secure.
A wall of protection from the world outside;
A haven created to protect me
From the disappointments and heartache
Of my youth.

And now, I feel as though
I am looking through
A window at life passing me by.
I struggle to break through
This safe place,
Which has become a prison cell to me.
My cocoon of safety, my friend,
Has now become a bitter enemy;
An enemy that has brought me
Much sorrow and isolation,
Preventing me from attaining
The very things
I desire so much.

Longingly, I look at others
Who are so at ease with themselves;
Making friends,
Having close friendships,
And are connected to life.
At times, these things
Seem so unattainable,
So strange to me.
I hold back,
I run from close encounters
Where I might be known;
Seeking to fade into the background
Like a chameleon blending in
With its surroundings.

Lord, please help me
To break through my prison.
I long to be a part
Of the joys of being alive
And free to be who You created me to be.
