One of the protections the Lord provides for His people is the idea of not being unequally yoked, a believer with an unbeliever in marriage. Besides the idea of marriage representing two becoming one, and the two needing to draw their strength from the Lord to make a strong covenant between themselves. This notion of not being equally yoked has important historical implications regarding keeping God’s people free from destructive outside influences that would undermine their way of life. God was severe with those who were unequally yoked with someone who worshiped foreign gods.

Moses, in Numbers 25:5, spoke the word of the Lord and told the judges over Israel to kill those citizens who have yoked themselves to idols. This was a carnal attempt to keep God’s people free from destructive influences which in this case was Baal worship that had the most profane demonic rituals associated with it that offends the righteousness of God. Because of Jesus’ dictate to love your enemies, the pureness of your heart is what you must protect from undue influences that are all around you. This can be difficult in a religiously diverse society, but Jesus said in Luke 6:43, “No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.”

Are you producing good fruit? Are you evenly yoked with others around you, like two oxen that work together to produce a good grain of fruit? Romans 12:21 tells us to “not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” Isn’t it important to guard your heart against destructive ideas that ultimately will produce bad fruit if planted in you? The good must not be contaminated if it wants to overcome evil with good.

Are you allowing the windows of your soul, which are your eyes, to watch anything and everything that could spoil the good fruit in your spirit? The judgment of God that comes in this life is the mere result of your choices that unequally yoke you with sinful influences, allowing dangerous elements in that undermines the plan God has for your life to produce good fruit and transform the world through God’s love and righteousness.
