If we attend church, read the Bible, believe it to be the truth—then we must tell that truth to others. It follows as naturally as salt with an egg, a keyboard with a computer.

The truth of the gospel is not something to whisper in back alleys, to veil with fish-symbol car stickers. It is something to shout from the rooftops, to proclaim unashamedly without fear. That is God’s plan.

Christians went public with the gospel many years ago, but in recent times no. The world we see around us is the result. People’s need for salvation is just as great now as in the first century. Probably more so.

Evangelism has to move from verbal theory at a church microphone to action in the field. Spreading the good news surely must be the major purpose, the reason for being, of every church. We are saved to be instruments in saving others.

We are not sanctified to sit comfortably in seminars and conferences sipping our tea, but to spread the gospel. A pastor may proclaim he has the biggest church congregation (maybe five thousand) in a city of two or three million. Yet probably only one per cent of that population has even heard of that church. There is no room for complacency.

The pastor should be the cheerleader who fires up the crowd for the big game—which is seeing souls saved.

Bible study, prayer, worship, yes, yes, yes—but no, no, no to picnics, socializing, ladies’ dinners, men’s breakfasts, youth group outings to the bowling alley, etc. Such activities are the plague of the church. They make satan smile and destroy desire to tell the gospel. They turn us into weak, inward-looking wimps, and the church into a social club.

We have to change direction. Every church board, pastor or minister should be approaching the local council (City Hall) to enquire what can be done in public outreach. Eg, what are the public possibilities in preaching, singing, tract-giving. If preaching is banned, then brief gospel comments in between a choir performing publicly can be subtle yet effective. Nothing ventured nothing gained!

Individual believers, there is much you can do! Put a meaningful sticker or sign on your car. Hand out tracts, leave them in phone boxes, buses, trains. Make sure your tract contains the basics of the gospel. Wear a Christian badge on your lapel—you’d be amazed what a conversation starter it is.

Hey, we’re talking about a person’s eternal destiny. In telling the gospel you may be laughed at, abused, mocked, but brother, sister, you’ll have done your job. We need a revolution in attitude—and it starts with you and I.
