From where do we get our ideas
about how a wife should be?
Is it the culture that we live
or modern society?

"Be a strong independent woman."
"Look out for number one."
But where are the happy marriages?
My search had begun.

As I talked with lots of women,
all I heard were complaints
of husbands who don't measure up
and instead are just constraints

to what she wants to accomplish
in order to be happy.
Prince charming has become
rather distant and quite snappy.

It was very tempting to join in
and bash my husband too
to show her that she was not
the only one with this view.

But what does God say?
After all, He's the one
who created this thing called marriage
when the world was just begun.

God declares that a wife
is to help and to submit
to her husband's leadership,
but I must admit

that the thought of being a helper
causes rebellion in my heart,
because it goes against everything
I've been told from the start.

"Be a strong independent woman."
"Look out for number one."
I'm not supposed to be weak.
I am second to none.

But why was there no peace?
We weren't on the same team.
So I opened up the Bible
to find answers from the Supreme.

God showed me that I have believed
the lies of this world.
The distorted concept of marriage
that has widely been unfurled.

Complaining brings discouragement
and encourages opposition
which tears down a marriage
and thwarts God's mission

to build happy marriages
which result in happy homes
where people love each other
without putting themselves on the throne.

These lies destroyed our oneness
and prevented my embrace
of God's purpose for me
and the joy that does replace

the bitterness and anger
that once destroyed my life.
But now I am so thankful
to be a helping wife

who loves and affirms her husband
in all that he does
not ruining him or tearing him down
like I always was.

Independence is overrated.
How can we be one
if we're two separate people
trying not to be outdone?

I'm gonna do this God's way
and build my husband up
and stop fighting against him
and stirring things up.

Is a bossy wife attractive?
Can you really develop trust
with someone who talks about you
with irritation and disgust?

When we married, I joyfully
gave myself to you.
That hasn't changed. I am yours.
