Allow God

Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall.
Psalm 55:22 (NIV)

When my now twenty-two year old son was three or four he had a yellow jeep he used to drive around in the yard. This jeep had a battery that seemed to always need charging. One day Kenny, my son, decided to pull the wires apart and then he asked me to fix it. Well, I am not exactly Joe Handyman. I looked at the wires and began to put them back together, Kenny decided to help and had his hands in there trying to put things back together also. Although I appreciated the help, he was undoing what I had just done. Kenny didn’t really turn the job over to me; he wanted to keep his hands in there too. This made things take a lot longer than they had to.

Have you ever watched the cartoon Top Cat? In the beginning when the song was playing Top Cat had a coin tied to a string and threw it into a coin machine then pulled it back out. He never really gave up the coin. Can you imagine a boxer knowing defeat and throwing in the towel holding on to the other end? If he did, he would have to withstand another round of pummeling. Why didn’t Kenny just let me do the job? Why didn’t Top Cat pay the toll? Why didn’t the boxer just throw in the towel?

I have done this with God on several occasions, haven’t you? Knowing full well God has told us to bring him our burdens and he will handle them, we seem to want to hold on and not allow God to do his work. What burdens do you have; sin, sickness, grief, anger, fear, anxiety? Are we allowing God’s will to be done or do we continue to keep our hands in there trying to help? Sure we have to do the foot work, but why don’t we let God handle the outcome? If we cast our cares and burdens upon God he will handle it and not let us fall. Today, let’s get out of the way, let go of the other end of the towel and allow God to do his magnificent work in our lives.
