The unity in community promised by the Scriptures among followers of Jesus Christ is unequalled.It is an anti-loneliness capsule that is always effective.The gathering of children of God in His presence heralds the fullness of joy.No wonder then that Apostle Paul says in Hebrews 10:23-25 that
"Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm,for God can be trusted to keep his promise.Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and works."
It is sad to note that this laudable hope of living has been twarted.Apostle Jude lamented in verse four of his one chapter book,
"I say this because some ungodly people have wormed their way into your churches,saying that God's marvelous grace allows us to live immoral lives.The condemnation of such people was recorded long ago,for they have denied our only Master and Lord,Jesus Christ."
From the foregoings,let us now consider some reasons people go to churches.
One,the motive behind some people's presence in the church is purely to buy and sell.The list of items for sale can be endless.Going to the church for the sole purpose trading is the reason many will not be absent in the church.This was how the ''house of prayer" has become the "den of thieves".(Matthew 21:12-13.
Two,this can be funny but this is what some people do:they go to the churches to read Newspapers and Magazines.They say that "church hours" are the only free time they have to read them most importantly during Sunday services.Other times are occupied!
Three,the reason some 'brethren' will be in the church is immorality.They seek their sinner-friends and have appointments or date.Some leave the church to carry out their immoral acts.Jude says,"The condemnation of such men people was recorded long ago...".
Four,some people will not miss any church service solely because of contracts.This happens more when a church is carring out some projects.Completion of such projects puts a stop to those people's church attendance.
Five,some 'brethren' will attend church services because they fear a minister of God.Anytime that minister of God will not be in the church to see them or he has been transfered to another church,people in this group will cease going to the church or at best,they will go "whenable".Who is to be feared,God or man?
Six, a set of people go to the churbhes for music only.The song and the musical instruments only are their only delight.They cant go to a church where the musicians are not good enough and the musical instruments complete. Besides this,they don't know any other thing taking place in the church.A sister once confesed to me that as soon as the choristers finishes singing and the instrumentalists are on holiday in a service,she falls asleep or have a wondering mind.She claimed not to have listened to a sermon in her church.Note that she will not leave her seat.
Seven,to steal! It is sad to note that the motive behind some people's presence in the churches is stealing.This group of people see every church service as their "cash withdrawal avenues".They seize every opportunity,brought them by their 'zeal',to leak the purse of their churches.
My dear reader,Why Do You Go To The Church? Let your motive be pure,holy and acceptable to God.Let it be for worship and service.Move with those who fear the Lord,their God.The Psalmist says,
I am a friend to anyone who fear you-
anyone who obeys your commandments."Psalm 119:63.
