Homosexuality and Sin:

As Christians, (especially in America and the rest of what is considered “the West”) we are very aware of the fast-growing socially and culturally accepted, several forms of sexual sin. From the mass-consumption of all forms of pornography, to pedophilia, homosexuality and even bestiality, it seems the “progressive,” liberal world we endure does everything in its power to remove traditionally accepted and Biblical standards of living. Not ALL traditions are worth observing, or are even relevant in today’s world, however, most Christians agree that sexual sin is important to avoid and teach against, if we have the courage. While it is obvious that sexual sin seems to be running rampant in today’s society, being supported through much of our entertainment media, schools and government, it is important that we stay vigilant, as Bible-believers so as not to give in to what is popularly labeled as “tolerance.”

When I say vigilant, what I don’t mean is vigilantes, or crusaders on a mission to tear down, attack, or otherwise assault those who struggle with, or have completely given in to sin. We are called to be like Jesus, hating the sin, but loving the sinner, despite their transgressions. We are told in His Word that none is righteous, that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Keeping this in mind, it is important to recognize the sin we cannot escape in our own selves, not without accepting the divine forgiveness that only comes through the blood of Jesus on a daily basis. I believe that as human beings, we all struggle with specific sins, obviously some more than others, and it’s uniquely different for each of us. Remember that even entertaining the thought of sinning, is sin in itself, even if we decide against the act, for whatever reason. Jesus tells us that lusting after another, is committing adultery in our hearts, for example. No one is perfect enough “to throw the first stone” in judgment of another sinner, yet since (in the U.S.) the 1960’s, and even before then, those who call themselves Christians have persecuted those who struggle with, or delve into, homosexuality. We, as a people of faith in Jesus, are quick to reason that people absolutely cannot have been born gay, yet we confess the truth found in the Bible which says… we ARE ALL born into sin because of the fall of mankind since Adam and Eve. Let that sink in for a moment.

Are we truly called by God to condemn people for their sins? Or, is that His, and His right alone, being the perfect creator that He is? We are called to love and forgive, as Jesus has loved and forgiven us, if we are true followers of Christ. In my simplistic, human understanding of how western culture has become so corrupted--as far as the overwhelming tolerance of homosexual sins are concerned--is this: during the “sexual revolution” more and more people with homosexual urges were encouraged to let loose, and become careless in their sexual sins--just as heterosexual sinners have done for millennia. Being accepted amongst their peers of sexual sinners, there developed a sort of club of this specific type of sin. Judgmental Christians, as well as secular society, condemned these people collectively, and it still goes on today. We have all heard the horror stories of homosexuals being murdered, beaten, and verbally abused because of their sin since the 60’s (as well as before). It is because of this hatred and the inability of too many to separate the sin from the sinner, and living according to the example of Christ, that compassionate people began to speak out against, what society now regards as “religious zealots,” and treating the whole controversial issue as if it were on the same level as the Civil Rights movement. Where there was a movement of pride in the culture and outward appearance of being African American (NOT a sin), there emerged what is called “gay pride” (which IS a sin) in retaliation towards the ruthless persecution of those more susceptible to this spiritually, mentally, and physically destructive lifestyle.

Now, just professing our love of Jesus—in the eyes of homosexuals, and gay-rights supporters—makes us “bigots.” Christians are considered by many to be a “hate-group” when Jesus taught us, and showed us, how to love. If the greater Christian community doesn’t really show the love of Jesus to ALL people, and is seen by non-believers as haters, then what kind of example are we setting? Why would anyone WANT to accept Jesus as their Lord when so many of His apparent followers don’t love as He commanded us to? Now, in this day in age, Christians are increasingly the persecuted ones. So, what do we do? Do we fight? Do we protest and form rights groups? Do we hold parades, or force OUR lifestyles on others and lobby for new laws? NO! We do what we should have done, as a worldwide community of followers of Jesus, in the first place--LOVE our neighbors as ourselves. That old children’s song “This little light of mine” applies here. We need to “let it shine, let it shine, let it shine!” as the words go… and as examples of our loving, forgiving Savior, we will win the hearts of sinners as we are called to do.
