The Principal Of Wisdom
The Hutchinson dictionary describes ‘wisdom’ as the quality or state of being wise. Wisdom is also described as, “knowledge and experience together with ability to apply them rightly, sagacious, sensible, discreet, prudent, and judicious.” Though the dictionary has a number of favorable adjectives to describe the meaning of wisdom, this article will seek to bring about the principal of wisdom from a Biblical point of view.

Many persons confuse the words philosophy and wisdom as being the same. This is not so. The Webster dictionary defines philosophy as the use of reason and argument in seeking truth and knowledge of reality, especially of the causes and nature of things. It also seeks into the principles governing existence, the material universe, perception of physical phenomena and human behavior. This has nothing to do with wisdom.

The Holy Bible states that King Solomon was the wisest man who ever lived on this earth. Though this maybe questioned by other religions in the world, this is what Christians believe. One may also question what is so special about wisdom that one should seek after it? Proverbs chapter 3 verses 13 to 19; King Solomon explains that happy is the man that finds wisdom and receives understanding. He said that the merchandise of it is better than silver and gold. Wisdom is more precious than rubies and all things that one can desire are not to be compared to her. He further explained that length of days is in her right hand and in her left hand, riches and honor. Her ways are pleasant and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her and happy is everyone that retains her. The Lord by wisdom founded the earth and by understanding He established the heavens.

Having viewed the richness of this gift, one cannot help but wonder where did wisdom come from? And where is the place of understanding? The book of Job chapter 28 verses 23 – 28 states, “God understand the way thereof, and he knoweth the place thereof. For he looketh to the ends of the earth, and seeth under the whole heaven; to make the weight for the winds; and he weigheth the waters by measure. When he made a decree for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder: Then did he see it, and declare it; he prepared it, yes, and searched it out. And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.”

In life, too much of anything is not good for you. Wherever there is positive there is negative to complement it. This creates a balance for one to know where to draw the line in decision-making. The fact that all of life is vanity, Ecclesiastes chapter 1 verse17-18 King Solomon forewarns us as he negates the principle of wisdom with this statement, “And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of the spirit. For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increases knowledge increases sorrow.” The truthfulness of this statement should be accepted through understanding and faith in God to appreciate the principle of this gift.

One of the most recognized and respected elements of human existence is education. The goals of many persons are to achieve a first or second degree and up to a PhD. in the various disciplines of life. Education is good in its place. It enhances ones capabilities in coping with the different modern technological inventions, communications and occupations; however, it is nothing to compare with wisdom. Therefore I beseech you all to take heed to the words of the preacher, King Solomon as he stated in proverbs chapter 4 verses 7-10, “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding. Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honor, when thou dost embrace her. She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee. Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings; and the years of thy life shall be many.” God bless you all.
