Most Christians with whom I enjoy some sense of what’s called “closeness” admit, often very privately that they do suffer or at least go through times, even seasons of relative darkness. Many would publically deny such times and events. After all, if we preach Super Man in the now, we must act out the part.

Elijah, a prophet after God’s and our heart went through a brutal darkness, right after the greatest public victory of his stellar career. One like him, John the Baptist suffered debilitating darkness in Herod’s prison. Spurgeon, called the prince of preachers often went through weeks of emotional darkness.

One way of dealing with what one really old timer called “The Dark Night of the Soul” is to take a positive look at it and learn some things that will keep you going in spite of a feeling of darkness much like the “thick night” of Moses while yet in Egypt.

Annie Dillard stated: “You do not have to sit outside in the dark. If, however, you want to look at the stars, you will find that darkness is necessary” In order to see God’s bright stars in your life a time of darkness may be required. Enjoy the beauty of the night; with Jesus at your side, even if you don’t think He is there. Remember the Lord made both day and night. Genesis 1:5” And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.” Enjoy both.
