Have you ever planned an event, had a committed numbers of RSVP’s, and still over prepared because those who responded didn’t show? That’s no big deal; right? Besides, things come up that prevent you from maintaining your commitments sometimes. Unfortunately, when our schedules change for the unexpected, we have to use our “pre-planned cushion” and make the necessary adjustments. Like the saying goes, when life throws you a curve ball, hit it out the park. This means that, whatever comes your way, planned or unplanned, good or bad, make the best of it. However, I’m not speaking of these individuals that legitimately have to change their plans because something came up; I’m taking about the EXCUSE MAKERS.

EXCUSE MAKERS are those individuals who say they’re going to do something, with no intension of making the commitment. They may truly want to do what it is that they’re telling you they are going to do, but they never make the necessary preparations, and at the last minute, they back out with a mother-load of excuses (bogus reasons) to follow.

A friend of mine told me of a parable in the bible found in Luke 14: 15-24. It tells of a certain man that planned a great supper and invited many. This certain man sent his servant to summons every invited saying, “Come, for all things are now ready.” That’s when everyone began making excuses as to why they couldn’t attend. The first said they had recently purchased some land and had to go see it, but everyone knows that you do not purchase land without first seeing it. Since the purchase was already made, where was the urgency? The second said they had bought oxen and needed to go test them; but again, this is something that would have been done prior to purchase. Another said he had recently married, so he couldn’t come. Where’s the legitimate reason for a newlywed couple to avoid a prior commitment, especially a social event?

There will come a time when our excuses just aren’t going to work anymore. Excuses are a bad habit that will prevent you from becoming as successful as you were meant to be; it will keep you from fulfilling your divine purpose. You will become known to others as untrustworthy and people will avoid calling on you when they need someone they can depend on. Your professional, social, personal, and spiritual life will suffer because of this weakness. Don’t allow this to be the character of your life…here’s to new beginnings.
