Psalm 131
A song of ascents. Of David.
1 My heart is not proud, LORD,
my eyes are not haughty;
I do not concern myself with great matters
or things too wonderful for me.
2 But I have calmed and quieted myself,
I am like a weaned child with its mother;
like a weaned child I am content.
3 Israel, put your hope in the LORD
both now and forevermore.

Throughout the course of a day my children ages three years and nine months respectively experience all kinds of mini-crisis. They may wake up hungry and needing immediate breakfast or nursing. They might need assistance on the potty or to have a dirty diaper changed. They may fall down and bump their head, get stuck under the kitchen table, be frustrated, lonely, tired or just in need of love and comfort.
How is it that they deal with all of these sometimes overwhelming experiences? You know it is interesting to note that I have never yet seen my nine-month old daughter analyzing the various aspects of her hunger nor have I seen my three-year old mentally carrying the burden of all of his scrapes on his back as he tries to “bear up” and “be strong”. There are problems, questions and hurts in their lives and I find that the answer to each and every one of these things for them lies not in a thing but in a person – Me. In their eyes, I am the answer to all of their problems. When my baby is hungry, she crawls to me and whimpers onto my lap and begins to nuzzle finding satisfaction at my bosom. She doesn’t question, she just knows that the answer to her hunger is in my arms. AT this point in their lives they see the answer to all of their problems in me.
It is not by accident that it should be this way. It is but a profound picture of our relationship with Jesus Christ. The simplicity of crawling into his bosom in all situations with no pretense of pride or human wisdom so often gets bogged down under all of our great doctrine, theologies, and teachings. How it would hurt me if my children sat inconsolably crying, questioning, analyzing, working desperately in an attempt to provide their own supper, change their own diapers, heal their own wounds - -how impossible! No, the answer to everything to them is me – me. I am their answer. And my job is to point to Jesus Christ because ultimately He is the person in whom all our needs are met.
How often we forget that our answer is found in a person, not in a direction, not in a “word from God”, or in an intellectual or emotional satisfaction concerning where we are and where we are going. It is just Him, Jesus Christ - -crawling into His arms, knowing that He will then feed us, bath us, comfort us, and take us where He is going.
