You say to ask, command to seek, to rap upon the door
Far from scorning feeble requests, You dare us ask for more;
The one who asks he will receive, the one who looks will find,
And the one who knocks upon the door will spend the night inside.

But often, Lord, we ask You for the desires of our heart.
We look, we ask, we ring the bell, and still hopes fall apart.
We hear ‘not yet’ or ‘not that way’ in a patronizing tone,
And ‘no’ seems to come across like we have just received a stone.

Could it be when You say ‘no’ to the deep longings of our heart
That it isn’t You, but a lack of imagination on our part?
You stand prepared to bless and dare we ask for the good stuff
Implying what we count as ‘good’ is still not good enough.

Our vision remains narrow when we think how You should bless,
As though hardship and adversity disprove Your graciousness.
The view through the keyhole’s chosen o’er the vista You provide.
Lord, with our expectations let us be unsatisfied.
