No One Understands

Bugs Bunny was by far one of my favorite cartoons while growing up. I have so many memories. We even purchased the Looney Toons Classics DVD set for our family. One episode in particular stands out today. One in which Bugs and Broom Hilda have been going at it, he looks towards the camera and says, “She was someone’s baby once”.

Babies are most precious gifts. They are in a class by themselves when it comes to the soft coo’s, cuddles, tender skin, tiny fingers, toes and mouths. The scent of a (clean) baby is so popular that people buy baby shampoos, soaps and powders to attain the smell for themselves. But it has to be mixed with that baby chemistry to achieve that fragrance.

There is a flip side to those precious babies as well. They are completely dependent upon you for every need. Those sweet coos can turn into blood curdling screams, that sweet baby lotion scent can be obliterated by the digestion and by product of one bottle. But as a parent you take it all, for the precious gift of life you have been given, because you understand.

Everyone we come in contact with today, whether you want to agree with me or not, was someone’s baby once. I don’t care how much evidence you think you have that the person was lab created by an evil doctor, they were someone’s baby once.
What causes people to be the way that they are? What has happened along the way that they believe the choices that they are making are going to give them the outcome that they are looking for? Do you even really care?

Scientific studies have shown that not having a father in the home is detrimental. Boy Scouts, Big Brothers, YMCA, outreach programs have all been designed to reach these children to offer them a role model to look up to. What do you see on the news? These positions are abused by the one in authority, scarring and wounding these children for life. Setting them on a path that tells them that this is all they are worth: both inside and outside of the Church.

Girls are taught from a very young age that their value, acceptance and ability to make it in this world are based on their looks. Cartoons, bikini’s for three year olds, beauty contests, magazines, movies, even the Disney Channel promotes this mindset. Babies are having babies, sex is glamorized, we are inoculating are twelve year olds against cancer caused by a virus that comes through STD’s.

Drug dealers are no longer on the back allies hiding like predators afraid to come out into public. They are in our schools, offices, traveling in their “mobile meth lab” RV’s and even in the richest neighborhoods. They no longer have to seek your loved ones out to get them hooked on the high dollar numbing agent that promises to take away their pain; your loved ones are seeking them out.

What do all of these people have in common? They were all someone’s baby once.

“Nobody understands”, has become the “excuse all” for every detrimental, life destroying behavior out there. Attorney’s use it to get murdering mothers acquitted from killing their babies.

Addicts use it to justify their need to get their next hit. Abusers use it in their inability to cope with an adult world, so they can only have “relationships” with children.

Something is way off in a society that will take an overweight child out of its parents’ home, but overlooks a mother seeking and denied assistance so many times that she kills herself and her children.

Something is way off when sex is glamorized, abortions for minors legalized, STD shot’s are mandatory and child molesters, rapists and “celebrity” abusers are set free.

Something is wrong when Christians sit down on the job in the face of all that is going on and say, “Well, it’s only going to worse, and the Bible says so”. I hate to break it to you, but “it’s only going to get worse” was NOT the great commission! Paul has a message for this mindset:

17For we are not, like so many, [like hucksters making a trade of] peddling God's Word [shortchanging and adulterating the divine message]; but like [men] of sincerity and the purest motive, as [commissioned and sent] by God, we speak [His message] in Christ (the Messiah), in the [very] sight and presence of God. - 2 Corinthians 2:17

There is only One Who is able to understand what “no one understands”. But how can you lead others to Him, Someone Who does understand if you are sitting around, just waiting for things to get worse?

Our call to Christ, our part in the Great Commission is a call to action IN SPITE OF things getting worse. We are to offer people hope.
What if each one of us, who say we are called by His name, had intercepted just one of those who believe, “no one understands”.

We are not called to be mind readers, to gossip about “what were they thinking” at the time they did whatever they did. Nor were we called to stay cooped up in a pretty building casting judgment and perdition on all those we think that we are “better” than.

We are also not called to try to convince everybody that “we understand”. Maybe you do, but most of the time you don’t and you probably really wouldn’t want to. How can I say that?
In order to understand why someone is who they are, the choices they have made or what led them to do what they have done, would require you walking the paths in their life. Did God ask you to do that?

You are called to share the Good News. Pardon me, but if I met you, and you said, “Just give it up, it’s only going to get worse”, I’d run as fast as I could in the other direction! That’s not Good News.

What is the Good News? In spite of all that someone has done, Someone still loves them. In spite of them believing they are not worth saving, He thinks they are. In spite of how bad it looks, He can give them hope for tomorrow. In spite of them being convinced that, “No One Understands”, He does and He was someone’s baby once.
