Like Waves on a Beach, Immersed in Gods Word

Recently after work and quite late, I was having trouble getting to sleep. So I put on some “mood music,” the sound of waves on a beach. It took only seconds it seemed for me to fall into a deep sleep. So soothing and comforting.

Later I got to thinking about waves and beaches and God’s Word. There are many parallels to be drawn, I think.

As the waves flow and ebb, each wave rearranges the sand on the beach. With gentler waves, the sand is merely rearranged, just as my understanding of The Word is rearranged, grows deeper and more meaningful, each time I enter The Word. No matter how many times I have read some portions of the Bible, I get something new out of that passage each time.

A very important part of that is reading different portions of the Bible, OT and NT. From that, I am able to piece things together for greater understanding and appreciation of the magnificence of God’s work. At other times, and it happens quite often, God simply reveals something to me that I hadn’t seen before, like a wave that unburies some treasure hidden in the sand of the beach. That usually happens at the very time I need that understanding.

If I’ve built a sand castle, it is soon torn down. Only the more substantial rocks stay in place. Holes I’ve dug in the sand are filled in. So it is when immersed on God’s Word. Misconceptions are torn down, voids filled.

The tides also flow and ebb, adding to or detracting from the force of the waves. The same thing happens with the ebb and flow of my Bible study and reading. When I have let up on my time in The Word, I remain little changed. When engrossed in The Word, I am changed. Usually with the normal changes in tides and the impact of the waves, the changes are gentle, even subtle it not closely watched.

Occasionally, storms hit with great force. The entire landscape can be and often is changed in an instant. The changes are dramatic, easily seen. Mother Nature has amazing power.

But of course, “Mother Nature” is God’s creation. The waves, the tides, the sands and treasures of the beach are of His making.

God spoke and created the heavens and the earth.

God speaks, through His Living Word and remolds man.

I do love the beach… the tides, the waves, the ever-changing sands.

Shalom,
Art
