How I Love

Busy trying to accomplish
the things I plan to do,
rushing through the day,
I stop and think of you.

Everything seems so important
to get to at the time,
I start out seeking your will,
then end up focusing on mine.

You said all men will know
that we are your disciples
by how we love one another.
I’ve read it in the Bible.

You could have said they’ll know
by how I go to church and pray,
but you said it’s how I love others
that’s important at the end of the day.

You could have said they’ll know
by the Baptism I received,
but you said it’s how I love others
that they’ll recognize you in me.

I can give money to the poor and
serve the church in different ways,
but do I care for others
in all I do and say?

If someone comes to church
who hasn’t been there before,
by the way I love others,
will they see you, my Lord?

I can say all the prayers
and sing the songs too,
but if I fail to love others,
how will they come to know you?

Lord, fill me with your love,
I have nothing on my own.
You’re the love within me,
when I am weak, you are strong.

And when this life is over
and you call me from above,
my accomplishments won’t matter,
what will matter is how much I loved.
