Larry Lilly's Letter Tuesday December 6, 2011

The Appointed Day

While preparing for the midweek service about a month ago I came across an interesting aside that captured my imagination. This can be dangerous, but this time I am certain this is a healthy aside.

A illustration from an old commentary stated this: "The translation of a Latin Inscription in the oak framework of a house built in 1636 read thusly; 'You would weep if you knew that your life was limited to one month, yet you laugh while you know not but it may be restricted to one day'"

The Bible plainly says in Hebrews 9:27 "And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:" This verse is in line with 1 Corinthians 15:22 "For as in Adam all die," add these and many other verses, visit a cemetery or read an ancestry lineage table we find that sure enough so far it is a sure bet we are going to die someday. And there is the out: someday.

The writer on the framework of the old house grasped the enormous comfort of someday. We love the word and thought of someday that we have even imagined a place we call Someday I'll, usually pronounced Isle. This fantasy island of dreams helps us to find excuse for failure to apply our time, talent and treasure and rather sweating at the brow we just know in our heart that we can wile away ignoring the tap on the door of opportunity and make for wasted or lost time in the forgiving climes of Someday I'll.

The bulk of the race called human is notorious for its ability to find half-baked reasons for procrastinating. We know some things must be done prior to the inevitable, but, hey, we've got some time left, so I will get to that later. In the case of far too many people temporary things of little import in the grand scheme of things are done while the wheels of time roll on toward The Day. The Appointed Day.

If your doctor told you that had at best less than twenty four hours left to live; who would you call first? What final family arrangement would you make first? Would you even be aware of the most important call? I speak of the most important call, the call upon the Lord Jesus, The Final arrangement concerning your eternal dwelling place.

I know the thoughts started by this piece are a wee bit morbid, but then each breath we take is a subtle reminder that they as our days are numbered and then... Someday has come.

We all live between two extremes; the sudden, "Welcome home child" or the awful, "Thou fool this night is thy soul required."

Jesus said it like this in John 9:4 "I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work."
