November 10, 2011 – Which Generation?

34 Truly I tell you, this generation (the whole multitude of people living at the same time, in a definite, given period) will not pass away till all these things taken together take place. – Matthew 24:34 AMP

There has been debate over this verse for hundreds of years. Some think this verse is proof positive that Jesus’ prophecy came true less than forty years after he said these words. In 70 AD the Roman tenth legion destroyed Jerusalem and the Temple, bringing the entire passage of Matthew Chapter Twenty-Four to a thunderous close. I disagree. Jesus words in this chapter (after verse two) have yet to be fulfilled. I will not get into a long drawn out discussion on the matter, but merely say that my focus today is on the fulfillment; today’s focus is on our generation.

I wonder why Christians don’t believe in the future fulfillment of the events described in this chapter of Matthew. It’s hard for me to comprehend why something in black and white is so easily misunderstood. Sometimes it is because Christians try to use their “wisdom” to reason their way through Scripture.

27 [No] for God selected (deliberately chose) what in the world is foolish to put the wise to shame, and what the world calls weak to put the strong to shame. – 1 Corinthians 1:27 AMP

God uses the foolish things of the world to confuse the wise. Very often when we can’t come up with a worldly explanation for Scripture we simply just skip to the next passage. The events in Matthew Chapter Twenty-Four read like science fiction, and many times prophetic passages are explained away as either symbolic, a fable told around a campfire, or something movie producer George Lucas could put on the big screen. We cannot overlook Jesus’ words in this chapter of the Book of Matthew. These events are coming, and I believe with everything in me that our generation will live to see them all come to pass.

Now just because I believe these events are coming does not mean they will come to fruition in my lifetime. I may be wrong and there are those who will read this and think I am that guy at Times Square in New York City with a piece of plywood hanging over his shoulder proclaiming the end is near. I am not that guy. I have never been one to pull stunts like that. What I am saying is that we should all be aware of the signs representing the end of the world: wars, famines, earthquakes, and those who lead others away from Christ. Do a little research on seismic activity and look at the church universal. Those two alone should open your eyes as these events unfold daily before our eyes.

Jesus’ gives clear instruction to the generation watching these incidents.
13 But he who endures to the end will be saved. – Matthew 24:13 AMP

To endure means we have to be ready for anything. We have to live lives of purity. We have to stand strong behind what the Bible teaches. We have to not let anyone or anything shake our faith. It’s easy to say that you do those things when you’re looking at some guy’s blog on a computer screen, but ask yourself some serious questions about whether you actually do live that way.

Do people know you are a Christian? If so, do they know because you have simply told them or because they have seen you live it? Do you live a life uncompromised, according to God’s Word, or do you live a life of trying to find the middle ground and please everyone? To endure to the end means we must never compromise. When we make concessions to others about what the Bible teaches as being truth, we are not persevering for Christ; we are conforming to the world (Romans 12:2).

Which generation are we living in? If you can’t answer that question, maybe you can answer a more important one. Are you enduring in this generation? Make the choice to endure today. Jesus said it’s the only way we can be saved from the coming destruction.
