Why I Love To Write

Every morning when I awake A song or a rhythm slips out from my sleep

and the tune remembered plays over again

my lips speak them and speak them repetitiously

and then

I say it and say it and say it again

And all my work comrades no longer grin.

So, this is why I want to write

The song, the verse the poetry the story

Plays in my mind
then up to my voice

I no longer stop it
cause it's ALWAYS there

And song and verse took up residency here

It's part of my life the stories of old

The songs of midnight
the tunes of gold

My mothers to blame,
for this I know

She planted the songs
and the rhythms dear

And I carry them,
with me
whenever I go
Into the night,
into the cold,
into the day light They are part of my soul.

And I have Babe to thank
my mother so dear Who gave me the tunes and the rhythms in youth

And now I pass them on to you

That you shall have song, rhythms and tunes that carry you through
Nights of terror, and days of dread

But with the song, rhythms and tunes will dance in your head

And what will be there in times of trouble? Songs, tunes, and arrhythmical toys that will take you through times of trouble

And all I can say
after I've said this is why I love to write and this is why I know longer dread

So the songs, the tunes, the rhythms given makes me love life,
makes me want heaven

And Ma ma's verse forever it shall play
and the day it's turned off
I'll have
nothing to say

But, perhaps my mantle of children will know
the songs, the tunes, the rhythms of joy
and think not a curse but a gift to employ.
