Family
Recently I spent a few days with my eighty year old father. He will turn eighty one in August, and while he is still relativity healthy, he is slowing down compared to years gone by.
Once a few lose strings were tied up here, I took off to Fort Payne on Wednesday afternoon. Thanks to Joel Glover and Wayne Steverson for taking care of my obligations here, I was able to go and spend some much needed time with Dad.
As soon as I pulled onto his street and saw his corner lot, it hit me that the yard needed to be cut. I can not remember a time his yard looked shaggy. Dad has always been one who cut the yard whether it needed it or not.
When he met me at the door, I saw his hair and the first thing out of my mouth was, “You need a haircut.” He has always had a full head of hair-which I am thankful to have inherited-but on this particular Wednesday evening, we could have put it in a nice gray ponytail.
He grinned at me and said, “I know it. Been meaning to, just haven’t had time.”
After an evening of roaming through Lowe’s and eating supper, we decided to get ready for bed. As I was going into my bedroom, he stopped me and said, “This light in the hall works, but you can’t use the switch on this end of the hall. You will have to go to the other end of the hall to turn it on and off.”
But as he flipped the switch, nothing happened. No light. No power to the hall light. He was confused. I was confused.
I assured Dad that the light was not a problem to me. So we went to our rooms and as I stretched out, I realized the switches were probably the problem. The next morning, we changed the bulb, but there was still no light.
As we roamed around town that day, I intended to get some bulbs and switches, but failed to remember. We did get his haircut, paid insurance premiums, wondered around Wal-Mart and K-Mart, and ate supper at Cracker Barrel. But we both forgot the switches.
Dad tried to turn on the light in the hall, when we got back to the house and it would not work. I got my multi-tool from my briefcase and went to work. Dad held the flash light and I worked on switches.
I discovered the switch was not working, so I moved the one next to it, swamping the two and the hall light worked. My celebration was short lived, because now he could not get the dining room light to come on.
He flipped the switch and the hall light came on. “Hey, it works. Look at that there is light in the hall.” I thought it would do a jig right then and there. But then he flipped the other switch and said, “Hey, this was working. Why is it not coming on now?” He was none too happy.
I explained that for tonight we had a hlal light and we would fix the dining room light the next day.
He got up the next morning and was soon standing at my door announcing that the dining room light was not working. I assured him we would figure it out and fix it as soon as we could.
Since I was going to leave that Friday afternoon, we went to the Courthouse to buy his car tag and then went to Lowes. Once we found the right area for light switches, we spent another thirty minutes deciding which ones to buy. Finally selecting switches and light bulbs, along with electrical tape, we headed back to the house.
After lunch I started to replace switches. Dad held the flashlight, while I worked with the screw driver and pliers.
Dad said, “Jeff, I didn’t know you knew how to do this.”
I looked up and said, “Well, this man named John Fuller taught me how to do this kind of stuff.”
He grinned and we got the lights back on.
