LOVE THEM TO HEAVEN!!
By Mercy Kambura Mate
In March this year, I attended the funeral service of one great lady. I had never met Joy Mwangi but the accolades that flowed that day said volumes. As the bereaved husband glowingly narrated to a packed church how he’s finding it hard to locate his own socks and belts, I couldn’t help the tears, and I heard several other sniffs around me.
But as he smiled through the tears and nostalgia, one thing was crystal clear; he was sure she was in a better place. And this is not about the ‘may the Lord rest her soul in eternal peace’ cliché that we say even of well known thieves and rapists to console ourselves. This was real, she had lived well!
Living well means many things to many people, depending on how seriously we took that philosophy lecturer. But I’m referring to one who lived with eternity in sight, one who dedicated her life to a course that will outlive her and her children; one that lived in the full knowledge that life goes on, even when it ends.
Though I couldn’t even begin to imagine the pain the family was going through, I could see the hope they had and the deep satisfaction of knowing that their loved one wasn’t playing hide and seek with the devil’s three pronged fork. She had given her life to the life giver Himself- Jesus.
As the eldest son and daughter read words from the Bible, I wondered, “What is the highest security one can give a family member?” True, we have paid life insurance for them, their education fund is healthy and we’ve stocked food for them to eat for decades in the event that an earthquake swallows Nakumatt, but honestly, how far does that go?
I imagine the pain of knowing, albeit deniably, that the probability that our dear one, member of our family, will probably spend eternity on the other side of heaven is 1(remember your high school math?) Now, eternity is a very long time, my friends. Remember the story of the rich guy who refused to give food to the beggar Lazarus and forced him to scavenge with the dogs? We are told he went to hell (don’t we dread that place!). Well, he’s still there, today and he’s not about to get out, he can’t! That’s eternity for you.
We do anything and everything humanly and financially possible to ensure that our loved ones live comfortably, but we stop short of the most important-ensuring their after-life is better. Instead, what do we do? Take them for dances and ensure they can dance ‘bend over’ with utmost vigor, let them sing along to anything; take them to bounce off castles or ride boats backwards on Sunday mornings instead of investing in their spiritual life and letting God direct their purpose .
Jesus says in John 10:28, “I give them eternal life, no one can snatch them from my hand…no one can snatch them from my father’s hand.” Now, that’s assuring, isn’t it? Isn't life in abundance what we wish for our loved ones? Well, I got news for you. It’s not found in money, expensive holidays or life insurance! The greatest inheritance a parent can give his children is godliness, no matter what your Sigmund Freud-(ill) advised philosophy lecturer told you!
