Larry Lilly's Letter Thursday October 13, 2011

I recently had an Internet exchange with a pastor friend I was attempting to help to settle upon a title for his new book. I let my Farr Creek imagination run a little wild, though I have seen advertisements for "Christian" books about as wild.

The subject of the book is the Lord’s Supper. As there are myriads of ideas on the subject I’m certain his book will make many enemies as any good book should. I offered the following helpful suggestion for promotion copy:

"In this new book, How to Make Tons of Bucks Using the Lord's Supper the author reveals the hidden secret veiled within the Last Supper that unlocks the door to untold wealth. Not only is this secret hidden in the text, it is painted subliminally in Leonardo da Vinci's famous painting The Last Supper. The author with the help of several Godly TV Pastors discovered this after fasting and praying for 75 days with no nourishment save food and drink. This book will change your financial life and each sale also contributes to the wealth of the author."

I already told you the copy is a spoof, a figment of a wild imagination so please do not flood my inbox with orders for Last Supper Bucks. I know you so want it be real. There is no such book! Live with it.

Jesus talked about people, mostly men as women weren’t recognized as full humans back then by the general population, and money on several occasions. One such occasion is given in Luke 12:15 "And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth." The truth being dealt with contextually is plain old fashioned greed, the compulsion for evermore ad infinitum. A modern term often used in place of covetousness is materialism. The initial complaint was from a man who felt cheated in getting a share of an inheritance.

The biblical concept taught by Jesus in the above story is simple in that He points out that whether at your certain death you leave behind many or few toys you still leave them all behind. You are not the sum total of your possessions, but in truth you are something totally different than your possessions or lack thereof seem to imply.

It's a good practice to really search the scriptures when you are approached financially and someone uses a biblically passage to entice you in the hope of earthly gain. God does bless His people yet we must face many biblical examples of privation concerning the things of this world.

If/when you sell your soul or a piece thereof, the price is always way to low. A missing or partially missing soul presents a handicap far more devastating than any physical loss.
