The Scriptures
Proverbs 8:1-4, 22-31 – Wisdom Calling
Key Verses: (MSG)

• 1-4: “Do you hear Lady Wisdom calling? Can you hear Madam Insight raising her voice? ²She’s taken her stand at First and Main, at the busiest intersection. ³Right in the city square where the traffic is thickest, she shouts, ⁴'You – I’m talking to all of you, everyone out her on the streets!'” – Wisdom, portrayed as a women, stands in contrast to the seductress portrayed in chapter 7. She stands at the cross roads of our life, ready to guide and lead everyone one of us through the decisions in our lives.
  
  
• 22-23: "God sovereignly made me – the first, the basic – before He did anything else. ²³I was brought into being a long time ago, well before Earth got its start.” – Wisdom was created by God, not by Man, long before Adam and Eve.
  
  
• 30-31: “Day after day I was there, with my joyful applause, always enjoying His company, ³¹delighted with the world of things and creatures, happily celebrating the human family.” – Wisdom, hand-in-hand with God, participated in the creation of the universe.
  

Points to Contemplate:

• “Do you hear Lady Wisdom calling?” Does Wisdom cry out to you in the avenues and byways of your life? Do you listen for her voice? Can you hear her cry through all the din and clatter of competing noise? Does the television blare its “buy-me messages” incessantly in your home? Is your car radio constantly pounding out a diatribe of news and opinions? Are you surrounded with the clamor of conversation and dialogue? Is there a need to schedule quiet time in your life so that you are able to hear God’s wisdom and guidance?
  
  
• What is “Lady Wisdom?” Is it possible that this is another name for the Holy Spirit? Doesn’t the Holy Spirit provide you with insight and guidance? If this is the Holy Spirit, what are your thoughts concerning His creation at the beginning of time, as discussed in these verses? Has the Holy Spirit been around for all times, calling out to everyone throughout history? Perhaps, Solomon is describing the Christ? As John says, “In the beginning was the Word…” Could wisdom be the result of our membership in the body of Christ?
  
  
• Where do you seek wisdom? Are you seeking the truth and wisdom created by God at the beginning of time or do you tend to follow man-made “truths” or fads? How can you tell the difference? How can you be certain you are following “Lady Wisdom” and not the “Seductress?”
  

Promises of the Gospel:

Solomon’s method of personifying Wisdom gives us the ability to evaluate the importance that knowledge of God’s teaching can play in our lives. We are the ones making the choices to learn from Him. Knowledge and Wisdom is available to us in the streets and byways of our lives if only we choose to take the time to look for it. As we do, as we study God’s Word and open our hearts to His guiding Spirit, we become better prepared for the challenges and hardships that will come our way in life.
