September 28, 2011 – Super Christians
We who are strong [in our convictions and of robust faith] ought to bear with the failings and the frailties and the tender scruples of the weak; [we ought to help carry the doubts and qualms of others] and not please ourselves. – Romans 15:1 AMP
In my walk with the Lord I have literally met thousands of Christians. I can remember tons of faces but few names, but I will always remember both the face and the name of those Christians who I perceived to be strong in their faith. I call them Super Christians and they are the subject of today’s blog.
I guess my whole problem in being able to spot Super Christians all these years has been my perception of people. My view of this elite group included people who would raise their arms and sometimes dance during worship. When they were called upon to pray in a corporate setting their prayers were so long and eloquent that I took more notice of their words than Whom they were praying to. I thought that if I ever got to the point where they were in their walk then I would really have it together. I thought these guys could literally move mountains, not because of their faith, but because they seemed to me like Superman: able to leap tall buildings in a single bound.
I wanted what these Super Christians had so bad that I decided to spend time with some of them. Then I found out a sad truth: none of them were superheroes living in the Hall of Justice. They were just hurting and confused people trying to do anything for God so He would work a miracle in their life. They were exercising their faith at church and in front of their fellow church members, but they were not living it in their life.
Now don’t get defensive and immediately conclude that I’m putting all Super Christians into a fraudulent category. I am simply saying that from my personal experience that my view of those who I thought were Super Christians was wrong. I know that there are Christians out there with faith that can move mountains. My wife Marlo is one. When she prays the earth moves. I know you don’t know her but take this into consideration: if it weren’t for her prayers, her stubborn, stuck in his ways husband would have never come to have a relationship with Christ. Trust me, I knew the guy: that was one BIG mountain.
I have found out through the years that I cannot judge people: I have to judge their fruit. Super Christians may not pray better than anyone else, but their children will be well behaved. They may not raise their hands or dance at church, but they will always be ready to lend a helping hand when they’re needed. They may not be at church every time the door is unlocked, but you can rest assured their family always comes first. They may not have the highest paying job, but they will be doing their best at what they are doing. And you may not even think their prayers can move mountains, but just sit back and watch what God does through them.
But in all these qualities Super Christians possess, we must still be on the lookout for the frauds. People who we think are strong in the faith may actually be the charming snakes I spoke about yesterday. They could be offering advice and listening so they can spread the latest gossip. They could be driven by greed and think they can financially gain by associating with you. Or they could just be a common thief and have the intent of robbing you blind when the opportunity arises. It’s sad to say any of that, but even those who we think are the best Christian we’ve ever seen could be plotting such things. Bad things just don’t happen in the world, but they happen to Christians by Christians every day.
The key to combating such atrocities lies in our faith. We should try to grow in our faith every day. We need to seek God and His will every moment of the day. He will show us both the true and the fake. The more we seek and listen to Him the stronger our faith will be. And before we know it, we’ll be the ones able to leap tall buildings in a single bound.
