Larry Lilly's Letter Monday September 26, 2011

One of the greatest problems facing leaders in any field today is the absolute necessity to change to adjust to the realities of your profession or calling. Most demanded changes or adjustments are not earth shaking but they are part and parcel of the growth process. Failure grasp and activate this truth guarantees failure or at the least stagnation.

The way leaders frame words is key to enlisting the willingness and often create the desire to implement new ways of achieving stated goals. Henry F. Harrowe made a helpful statement on this subject when he wrote:

"It is always safe to assume, not that the old way is wrong, but that there may be a better way." Even if "The way we have always done it" is working there is at least the possibility it can be done better. I cannot think of a business of any sort, be it secular or religious that could not do a better of job at public relations and customer comfort once they walk into your place or meet your lead people.

Certainly change for the sake of change is counterproductive but change as a well thought out experiment can often bring extraordinary results. Often something as simple as changing attitudes can seemingly work miracles. The other side of this coin is that the need for a change of attitude will often require a change in personal. In most businesses poor attitudes are a source of hindrance and loss. Very few people are skilled enough to compensate for a rotten attitude.

Having run around the fencepost to get to the barn it is imperative that I say Christ left the ivory palaces of heaven to among other things effect change. To say He upset the religious applecart is understatement of Everest proportion.

Christ changed the way we think about God, about salvation. He brought previously hidden light to just how families are to function, revealed the exalted state of women compared to the shoddy way society treated them at that time. Furthermore He brought to light the truth that the most despised person on earth is included in the scope of possible redemption, as noted in His acceptance of the despised Samaritans.

Paul described the coming change to be wrought by Christ in Philippians 3:21 "Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself."

Change our body from vile to glorious, our heart from calloused to tender and our mind from unbelieving to belief. What wonderful changes the Lord is making in our life.
