Being like a child is not just about having child-like faith. It is about believing and trusting God. It is also about being completely dependent upon God.

STEP 1: We admitted that we were powerless over our addiction (dependencies, problems) and that our lives had become unmanageable.

Mark 10:13-16

“People were bringing little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.’ And he took the children in his arms, placed his hands on them and blessed them.”

Many of us – myself included – may not have pleasant memories of childhood. Some of us were neglected, abused or exposed to dysfunctional behavior. A friend once told me, “We are all from dysfunctional families because we are all only human”.

The point is that many of us have put up walls around our hearts. We have determined that no one will ever hurt us or take advantage of us again – that we will never be as vulnerable as we were as children.

But that is exactly what God needs us to be – vulnerable and powerless. Just as children are completely dependent upon their parents for all of their needs, we must depend on God. We must cry out to Him – even when we do not know what we are crying out for. He sees the deepest parts of our heart and knows us better than we even know ourselves.

Admitting that we are powerless does not mean becoming a victim again, it only requires honesty. If we can take an honest inventory of our situation, we can take the first step towards becoming healthy.

In our own power, we may be perplexed, feel persecuted or struck down, but in God‘s power, we are not in despair, not abandoned, and not destroyed. In the death of Jesus, we have eternal life and life on this earth to the fullest. (II Corinthians 4:8-10). God's grace is sufficient. It is all we need (12:9).

Take time to thank God for the blessings He has given you. Then ask Him to help you turn control over to Him. Give Him each day and remind yourself that he is in control, not you, and that His love for you and His wisdom are infinite.
