food they craved....
'Can He also give
bread,
or provide meat
for His people?'

"What is My child
upset about,
NOW?"

[GENTLE VOICE.]
"She's reading
The Word,
Father."

[STERN FROWN.]
"My Word is supposed
to make My children
peaceful!"

[GENTLE SHAKE
OF THE HEAD.]
"No, Father."
[SMILE.]
"On the contrary,
she is very disturbed."

[GRUFF GAZE.]
"WHY."

"Well....."
[GENTLE SIGH.]
"She doesn't feel
that You should have
gotten mad at the
children of Israel....."

[GRUFF SIGH.]
[BECKON TO AN ANGEL
WHO HAS JUST APPEARED AT
THE THRONE ROOM
DOOR. THE ANGEL'S
WINGS ARE DROOPING,
AND HE IS WIPING
HIS PUDGY ANGELIC FACE
WITH A BIG WHITE
HANDKERCHIEF.]
"Which TIME?"

[SIGH.]
"The time they were
out in the wilderness...
and complained about
not having any chicken."

[GRUFF VOICE.]
"CHICKEN?"

"Well.......QUAIL."
[GENTLE VOICE.]
"You gave the children
of Israel in the wilderness...
....quail.....
and, then smote them."

[GRUFFLY NOD,
WHILST LISTENING
PATIENTLY TO THE
ANGEL WOEFULLY
KVETCHING ABOUT
HOW HOT IT IS
DOWN IN SOUTH TEXAS
THIS TIME OF
EARTH'S YEAR.]
"They ALL deserved
to be smoted:
spoiled BRATS!"

"Well......"
[GENTLE PAUSE.]
[SYMPATHETICALLY
NOD AT THE ANGEL
WHO IS NOW SHIVERING BECAUSE
HAVING COME THROUGH THE UPPER
ATMOSPHERE HE GOT
AWFULLY CHILLED.
ANOTHER ANGEL
CALMLY WALKS OVER
AND WRAPS A BIG
BLANKET OVER HIS
FRIEND.]
"Our daughter feels
that You should have
started a Wednesday
Night Chicken/Quail
Night, instead. That
would have solved the
whole problem, and
everybody would have
been happy, and
nobody would have
gotten smot'ted."
[SMILE.]
"HER words: not
Mine."

[GRUFF GAFFAW.]
[FROWNING PATIENTLY DOWN
AT THE WOEFULLY
FACED ANGEL, WHO
IS KNEELING ON
ONE OF THE VELVET
KNEELING CUSHIONS ON THE
THRONE ROOM FLOOR,
SHIVERING AND SWEATING
UNDER THE BIG
ROYAL BLUE WOOLEN BLANKET,
AND ASKING
IF HE CAN GET ANOTHER ASSIGNMENT:
MAYBE LIKE ON A SUMMER CRUISE IN JUNO, ALASKA.]
"WHO would have
been HAPPY?"

[GENTLE VOICE.]
"Well.....she just feels
that might have been
an OPTION for You."

[GRUFFLY SHAKING
HIS HEAD AT THE
ANGEL,
WHOSE NAME IS SMUDGLEY.]
"Hasn't My child
learned yet........"
[STERNLY POINTING
TO THE OPEN THRONE ROOM DOOR.
SMUDGLEY WOEFULLY LOWERS
HIS SWEAT-MATTED
HEAD, GETS UP FROM
HIS KNEELING CUSHION,
TRIPS OVER THE BIG BLUE
BLANKET, AND WINGS DROOPING,
TRUDGES WOEFULLY
BACK OUT: TO FLY
BACK TOWARD EARTH AND THE
OVEN-HEATED-LAND
-OF-THE-ALAMO.]
"......Her LORD doesn't....
do.....
options."
******************
But
before
they had sated
their craving,
while the food
was still
in their mouths,
the anger
of God
rose against them
and
He slew
the strongest
of them.
[Psalms 78:30-31]
