Behold He Comes
Never is the peace of God so great as in the middle of a storm, the light of God shines never so bright as in the blackness of the night, the love of God is never so strong as when a broken heart looks up to Him for strength.
I remember a story in scripture about four close friends, actually they were a very close knit family, two sisters, (Mary and Martha) and their brother Lazarus, and a man called Jesus. No doubt they had many happy evenings together as Jesus talked with them. To think the miracle worker of the gospels had taken time to befriend these common folk. It was while Jesus was away one particular time that Lazarus became very ill. Mary and Martha called frantically for Jesus to come and touch Lazarus as he had done to countless others and drive away the shadows of death which were all around him and heal his fevered body. But he lingered not far away and this young man died. Mary and Martha were shattered and wrestled with many feeling of hurt and frustration. For they knew that Jesus had been aware of Lazarus’s illness but did nothing. For Jesus it was very hard not to come and place his hand upon Lazarus’s fevered brow and heal him. The gift he wanted to give was greater than they could imagine. The portrait he wished to paint was to be the master piece for all those who suffered loss, he would come but when he did he would raise Lazarus from the dead so others would learn that through him they would not need to be afraid even though death came upon them. When he arrived in Bethany the home town of Mary and Martha, Lazarus had already been entombed and it was the fourth day, the day when all hope fled for those Jewish believers, for they believed that the spirit of the dead lingered by the body for three days and then departed. Even if Jesus did come now they thought not even he could restore Lazarus to life. It is interesting that the shortest verse in the Bible is found in this story, as he looked in to the grieving faces of these two sisters and read their doubt and thoughts of betrayal, the scripture simply states “Jesus wept”. That’s it Jesus wept, was he weeping because of Lazarus’s death, I doubt this for he had come to raise him from the dead, he wept because the ones he loved doubted his concern for their brother. That day he did call Lazarus from the tomb and he came out wrapped in grave clothes, the message he left for those like Mary and Martha is simple yet quite profound, “remember I AM the resurrection and the life and those that believe in me though dead shall live again”.
