Dear God:
Thank you for this wonderful day. I know usually I start my prayers with “This is the day that you have made, I will rejoice and be glad in it.” So I guess today will be no exception to that practice. How can I express to you on this beautiful morning how grateful I am to have you in my life. With all seriousness Lord, I do not know what I would do without your promises of hope and protection.
I confess to you this morning that I feel that I have not lived at the level of commitment that I have in the past. Lord of this I am not proud. How often you have stepped into a situation in my life to warn me and deter me away from something that could destroy me. I owe my life to you in more ways than I could mention. Not only taking into consideration that my salvation itself is built upon your work at the cross, but my very daily existence is totally dependent on the life you have placed inside this body. Why do I allow myself to drift into complacency? It’s so easy, I just let loose and drift where the current leads. Unfortunately Lord, I feel sometimes like a boat dragging its anchor, and Lord, you are that anchor. Is this part of growing old; do others experience what I am experiencing?
My life is so different than in the past. Even those things I thought so important have drifted out of focus and as these things retreat into the shadows of my daily life, I find myself reaching for the renewed vision of today. Yet in all of this I feel more dependent upon you than ever before! At times I feel frightened and disoriented. You have blessed me so much with temporal things, such as job, home and church, but now Lord allow my feet to walk on paths you have chosen for me; light my way with the true words that are written in your book. Let me walk through the shadows of the unknown as I hold your hand in faith.
Lord you have spoken of the latter rain and certainly I have seen large numbers of people reach out for more of you than ever before. Amidst all of the wickedness that is in our world, your voice calls out to anyone and everyone to come under your wings. Lord I come; I come to you with a broken and contrite spirit asking with all diligence to be a vessel of honor in your hands. Use my life to reach those who are hungry, help me drive away the dark clouds of inadequacy and the effects of peer pressure.
In the distance Jesus is approaching, walking through the storm clouds of fear, his feet atop the waves of death and spiritual deprivation. I want to walk to where you are, I see the waves, I feel the wind. You are obscured in the darkness, but yet your voice is calling and encouraging me not to be afraid. As others watch I find my leg slipping over the side of the boat, reaching down looking for something firm, a foundation upon which to stand. It comes to rest on hope and as I step out completely I find that your grace has met me where I am and provided a way for me to reach you. My heart beats most rapidly, emotion wells within me as I walk through the impossible, to reach the source of all my dreams and heavenly imaginations. How sweet the sounds of his voice as his arms reach out to me encouraging me to come. The storm fades into the background and I am surrounded by light, a light that washes over me like a river of peace and refreshes and renews my vision. Christ is all I see, and for me that is more than enough. I feel safe and protected from the storm as I am embraced with God’s mercy.
