Larry Lilly's Letter Monday July 18, 2011

Many, if not all, families, corporations, even churches have the goal of unity; sensible people would like to see unity within the human race. Truth is, unity is illusive and unlikely to be achieved until "Shiloh" comes, meaning when Jesus comes.

This truth exploded in my mind as I observed a crowd of family and close friends at a wake meal at a lovely church in my hometown. The meeting itself was peaceable and a rather good time. I learned that Presbyterians like to eat much as do Baptists. For years I thought the Presbyterians were more refined. Oh well, life is full of disappointments.

While I was musing, a note arrived via email from a close friend who labors in training couples to represent AIG, or Answers In Genesis. I thought if I stop what I'm doing and read this note from Dave, I will know even more about creation. Whenever Dave answers a question, you will always know more about the subject than you ever dreamed or wanted to know. Knowing the risk I opened the email and low and behold, a brief, but pointed short zinger was placed at my disposal, a zinger that fit my thoughts at what was officially a meal after the life celebration for my Sainted Mother.

Here is Dave's gem:

"Peace is that brief, glorious moment in history when everyone stands around........ reloading."

Families, corporations, teams and churches are all one, but consist of differing factions, each of which desires superiority over the other factions. Often reality such as death, forces the factions to smile and behave, only briefly, but behave nonetheless.

Rather than smiling while reloading take the better path as mentioned in Psalms 85:10:

Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other.

Adam Clarke points out truth and righteousness are lined on one side with mercy and peace on the other. Truth is demanding righteousness while mercy is pleading for peace. How do the two sides meet? It is foundational in our Christian faith that this miraculous, healing meeting took place at the eternal altar of reconciliation, Calvary.

Because of the meeting at Calvary we Christians are admonished in Ephesians 4:31-32:

Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.

No reloading, just peace that passes understanding in Christ.
