Res ipsa loquitur. The uninsured motorist’s statute. Mass torts. Protecting the well-being of our clients often requires us to delve into arcane concepts. Every week, we negotiate the twists and turns of a constantly shifting legal terrain. As lawyers, our professional growth requires achieving a high level of hard-earned sophistication. However, our spiritual growth requires the opposite.
Children laugh easily. Children play freely. Children love purely. Perhaps more than any other people on the planet, lawyers need to embrace Christ’s teachings of attaining the mindset of a child. Exceedingly anxious concerns about your practice can choke out the roots of spirituality, as thorns choke out fruitful vines. Our emotional well-being requires us to balance out the long hours spent immersed within our stressful, thorny situations. God has allowed, encouraged and practically commanded us to think as children think, to feel as children feel, at least occasionally. This recurring theme arises in several of Christ’s teachings, including 1) Give no thought for tomorrow, 2) Let the spirit tell you what to say in the moment and 3) God’s greatest commandment.
GIVE NO THOUGHT FOR TOMORROW. Matthew 6:34. Today holds every opportunity for anything you could possibly want. Children enjoy the moment and you can, too. God created this world as your playground to explore. Frequently let go of your worries about your cases, your billable hours, your professional future. God completely controls the universe and you are His protected child. Feel that safety and rediscover your basic spiritual identity. You live over a safety net where, even when you fall, God’s protection will compensate. With God on your side, nothing in this world can hurt you. Let go of your worries and let God’s flow carry you through this very day.
LET THE SPIRIT TELL YOU WHAT TO DO IN THE MOMENT. Luke 12:12. Imagine speaking straight from your heart, completely unrehearsed, and never suffering a repercussion. Simply asking for something and always receiving it. Seeking for something and always finding it. Every knock opening every door. Direct and fulfilling. Children speak honestly and ask for what they want directly, because it’s the only way they know how. God wants you to do the same. Find a place, a friend, a safe set of circumstances where you can open your heart and loosen your tongue. Express what you really want. Catharsis leads to self-awareness. Your job requires you to painstakingly filter your words. Balance this by occasionally taking the filter off and just letting the words gush forth, thus showing who you truly are and what you truly want.
GOD'S GREATEST COMMANDMENT. Matthew 22:37. As a lawyer, how would it strike you if only a single written law existed for the whole planet? No rules of procedure. No rules of evidence. No regulations. No case law. One statute, comprised of one sentence of 19 words. How’s that for simple? Children can follow one rule and so can you. So: Love the Lord thy God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. Surrender to God as Jesus did and taught. Give your problems to God and let Him guide you through them. Every set of life circumstances, no matter how complicated (including yours right now), gets better with God’s presence. Pray and feel God’s guidance pulling you in His direction.
Frightening to consider, contrary to every maxim of legal practice and absolutely necessary for spiritual growth in our contentious profession. You can find time every week to re-achieve the mindset of a child, in contexts that do not threaten your practice. If you do so, you will discover an added dimension of God’s peace in both your personal and professional experiences.
