MOMENT OF GLORY
The greatest moments are not
The days of coronation
Neither are they the hours of celebration
When a cake is cut
Our moments of glory are
Those dark horrible hours
Which in persevering
We won a prize!

Imagine that – winning through all the defeats that we face but with a tenacity to go on no matter what it has cost us or will cost us. Isn’t that the definition of heroism?

Sometimes the hero is not just the one who won but the one who had the courage to go. There is the story of the Tanzanian long distance runner who limped into the Mexico City Olympic Stadium in 1968 over an hour after the winner of the 26 mile marathon breasted the ribbon. The man, whose leg was bloody and bandaged was experiencing intense pain and was only managing to put the next foot ahead of the other. The few remaining spectators rose and gave him a standing ovation as if he was the winner. Then the stinker! “Seeing you had no chance of winning”, a curious journalist asked, “ why didn’t you just quit rather than sustaining these injuries?” The runner’s response perhaps remain as the most enduring legacy of that Olympics. Hear Him, “My country did not send me 7000 miles to start the race, but to finish it.”

That is the moment of glory.
