Larry Lilly's Letter Tuesday June 28, 2011

A man who by his own admission does not care all that much for me wrote:

"Larry, I think the reason you speak and write so much on forgiveness is because you are such a low life you need tons of it."

Certainly I know many "high life's" who could use a little forgiveness, but to be fair and balanced I confess to be in what seems a constant need to approach the throne of grace and ask for forgiveness. The Bible is loaded with scriptures that encourage me to do this regularly.

Over the course of my entire life and even during these 49 years of knowing the Lord as savior I confess to using 1 John 1:9:

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

I do this because in my heart I know I need cleansing.

I confess to having in times past committed what one group called sins that fall into the category of "enormous." Actually enormous sins are easier to deal with than the little foxes that spoil the vine of life gradually.

Concerning enormous and inexcusable sins C.S. Lewis wrote:

"To be a Christian means to forgive the inexcusable because God has forgiven the inexcusable in you."

Though it is hard to find someone who has more inexcusable sins than me, when I do my first thought is to rejoice that at last I have found someone who is a worse sinner than me, therefore now after all these years I find that as bad as I am, I am better than…

The Lord Jesus rejoices when one of His own finally discovers that he/she can now "feel superior" to some low life. (Tongue in cheek).

Perhaps today you find yourself recovering from some mess and although the mess itself is attempting to, as quick sand, suck you down into oblivion, some who along the way you thought if you ever needed a friend it would be him/her are adding to the destructive pressure for your destruction. Painful isn't it?

There is a friend who is in the business of lifting your head and enabling you to go on; sometimes even more fruitful than when you walked as a Pharisee clothed in the glorious garments of self-righteous splendor. Notice Jesus on this theme in Luke 7:47

Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.
