MIRACLES ON THE HIGHWAY
BY
SYLVIA HENSEL
It was mid December and was already turning dark by the time I left work.
The weather was extremely cold and the roads were wet from recent snows. As I started home, my car began sputtering. I needed to get off the busy highway as I didn’t want my car stalling in the middle of heavy traffic. There was a road ahead used by several trucking firms and a service road cutting across it. I had to make a left turn and as I slowed down, my motor started to die, I barley made the turn onto the side street when my car came to a complete stop. The engine would not start. There was no one in sight and no cell phones back then to call anyone. I began to pray for God to send someone to help me. Immediately, a car appeared in front of me on the service road. I had not seen it coming. Two men dressed in suits jumped out. They came over to my car and without speaking to me, lifted the hood of my car. Within seconds they closed the hood, jumped back into their car and literally disappeared. My car started easily and off I went.
Now I had another problem, there were two left turns and a traffic light to get through before I got home. I knew if I slowed or stopped, my car would stall again. Once again I prayed for a miracle. There was always heavy traffic on those roads at quitting time. I had worked at the same placed for fifteen years and not once had I not had to stop for traffic at these intersections. That night there was no one on the road to hinder my turns and the light was green when I got there. I got to my driveway, turned in and before I could even straightened my car, the engine died.
I thank God He saw me home safely, and I do believe the two men who helped me were His angles.
Another time I was going to work, same place same road. It was also a cold winter’s morning. I had to drive over an overpass at I-270. The overpass was icy and as I began to drive across I lost control of the car. At the opposite end of the overpass there had been an accident. A car had spun around and was now pointed in my direction. The driver was standing in the middle of the road next to her car watching me slide toward her and her damaged auto. She was transfixed as if she couldn’t believe she was going to be hit again. My car continued gliding toward her. I prayed that God would send and angle to be a buffer between the two cars. The lady continue to stand there horror stricken. I glided the full length of the overpass, well over 100 yards, when suddenly, as if I had planned it, my car stopped within a breath of her and her car. I knew God had sent His angels to help me just as I had asked.
There was yet another winter morning that a dangerous situation occurred as I was driving to work. The road was covered with a thick layer of ice and slush. It was a six lane highway, three lanes heading east and three heading west. I was in the inner west lane when a sixteen wheeler pasted me, dousing my entire car in the icy muck; my front and back windows and both side mirrors were completely covered. I could see nothing.
At that hour of the morning the traffic was extremely heavy. I could not see to move to the right to pull off the road and traffic was moving too fast for me to stop in the middle of the road to clear my windows. My windshield wipers just smeared the mess across the entire windshield then froze. I was driving blind. I prayed for the impossible, “God drive this car for me; I don’t know what to do.” I had about a mile and a half yet to go with a left turn to make and two lights to go through. God did just that! I felt as though I was dreaming as I floated through traffic and found myself in the parking lot at work. God is a God of miracles. He said He would never leave us or forsake us, and He proved it to me that day.
Each morning before I left for work I would pray protection for myself and my family. I would like to share that prayer with you. It is from Germaine Copeland’s book “Prayers That Avail Much.”
PRAYER
Father, in the name of Jesus, I lift myself and my family to you and pray a hedge of protection around us. I thank You, Father that You are a wall of fire around about us and that You set Your angels round about us.
I thank You, Father that we dwell in the secret place of the Most High and abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I say of You, Lord, You are our refuge and fortress, in You will we trust. You cover us with Your feathers, and under Your wings shall we trust. We shall not be afraid of the terror by night or the fiery dart that flies by day. Only with our eyes will we behold and see the reward of the wicked.
Because we have made You, Lord, our refuge and fortress, no evil shall befall us, no accident will overtake us neither shall any plague or calamity come near us. For You give Your angels charge over us, to keep us in all Your ways.
Father, because You have set Your love upon us, therefore will You deliver us. We shall call upon You, and You will answer us. You will be with us in trouble, and will satisfy us with long life and show us Your salvation. Not a hair of our heads shall perish.
