Larry Lilly's Letter Tuesday June 21, 2011
Edward John Smith. Does the name ring a bell? You probably know someone with the name or at least part of it, such as Ed Smith, John Smith or even "Smitty."
What would you say is the defining event in the life of the John Smith whom you know?
The Edward John Smith I write about today defining moment was a simple and rather common everyday act that most us of do; ignored or "put off" warnings.
One of the most famous Sea Captains of his time, known as a rigid disciplinarian, Edward John Smith received a warning, slipped it into his pocket, failed to take action and the rest is history.
Captain Edward John Smith on the night of April 14, 1912 entered the Hall of Infamy when his failure to take appropriate action contributed to the death of 1490 men, women and children in the icy waters of the North Atlantic when Titanic sank to her murky grave having hit the warned about iceberg.
The unsinkable Titanic sank to its watery grave ninety nine years ago and is still the most talked about disaster at sea in history. The calling of the Lord on my life is such that almost daily I deal with people, young and old, rich and poor, functional and dysfunctional, educated and illiterate, all of whom find themselves in some mess or another. Inevitably the admission comes, "You know, I had warnings along the way, and I brushed them off and sailed on."
Along the way I have pushed in spite of "red flags" and experienced what Paul calls "shipwreck" and but for the grace of I would be "lying at the bottom of life's sea" much as the remains of Titanic. I am thankful for God's "current life resurrection plan."
Many people lost or redeemed fuss about the “Life restricting nature of the Bible.” Actually the so called "Life Restrictors" are in fact "Death Preventers" if we will but take heed and correct the course of our life.
Brushing aside, folding and placing warning notices into a pocket or purse to deal with later, can lead to ruin, destruction of your life and the life of those who trust you with their life.
Captain Smith was a true professional Sea Captain, recognized as the best of his time by the Royal Navy and the company he worked for, yet Titanic lies at the bottom of sea due to one neglected warning. Solomon addressed warnings in a broad sense when he wrote in Proverbs 14:12: (Notice the numbers)?
There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.
