Faith Exercise

At 3:00 PM Army Major Jean Meeks was observed reading Charles Dicken’s “Great Expectations” by Army Captain Margaret Fein.

“Ma’am, why are you reading a nove in the middle of the afternoon? I thought you were going to take a break?”

“Eh, I’m exercising, Captain.”

“Exercising, ma’am? When I think of exercising, its sit-ups, push-ups and a good paced two mile run. Beside we did that this morning at 0500 hours.”

“Come on, Captain! I’m involved in a little mental exercise. You know, keeping my brain in shape! Why is it that we work so hard to keep our muscles, heart and blood vessels in good shape but ignore our brain? It needs a little work, too. So I do things to keep it sharp and healthy just as well.

“We’ve both been out of college for a little while. Remember when you took Algebra II like it did. We did better on our tests and exams when we work similar types of problems over and over again. So when we saw it on a test or, in the case of the Army, on a problem in the field, we readily knew how to solve it because we have previous experience with it. Right?

Captain Fein began to think. “You know , ma’am, you’re right! God made our minds and I’ve read research that indicates that if your don’t use your mental abilities, your will lose it.”

“So, I’m taking a little time our of my work day to exercise my mind, Captain. I’d advise you do the same. You’ll feel better!”

Our faith needs exercise as well as our body. We exercise our faith through daily Scripture and prayer. In doing so, our Christian faith is strengthened and that represents Christianity (Faith, Hope, Love).
