Even though your goals and purpose for doing something may very well be right, is this the way to portray it? I wonder. Is recoloring a flag a sin? I don't think so, but still, to recolor a flag? Yes, it's just a flag, but what would happen if a person were to color the American flag pink and purple? Well, of course, that would be defacing.
The Confederacy ended 140 years ago. So why the emphasis of crushing something which has been already torn down? The Wars' veterans are long gone. The spirit of 'southern pride' lives on, with lots of misunderstanding to go with it. The flag still is being flown in the South. The other day, I saw a pick-up with a Rebel flag spray painted on the back. No, some people sure like to show their support.... for something which no longer exists.
The American UNCivil War... It is a bit of very sad history. The Confederate flag... it is a bit of very sad history.
That being said, it is a piece of history which needs not be recolored to match politically correct text-book teachings. Yes, slavery was (and IS) a horrible, wretched thing that God never intended His creations to do. The man who recolored these flags did it in the name of protesting slavery.
But IS it truly wise and just if we deface facts of history to proclaim a message? That is the question.
Not all Southernerners were firm believers in slavery. What about those who fought because of their disappearing rights and freedom from oppresive taxes and tarrifs?
I met a man the other day, actually, a college War historian, who gave a very good answer, in my opinion, on what the War was about.
He said, "It wasn't so much about the South seceding, but the North not allowing the South to sucede."
I say again: the Confederate Flag is a piece of history which needs not be recolored to match politically correct textbook teachings. Shouldn't there be a level of respect and consideration, for the tragic loss and waste which occured during those 4 years, and even years beyond? I would think that that level of respect should be high enough, so that a careless, undignifed act such as decoloring(DEFACING) the Rebel flag should never happen.

Leah K. Oxendine
