Salvation is a term which stands for several Hebrew and Greek words, the general idea being safety, deliverance, ease, and soundness (From The New Unger's Bible Dictionary).

Psalm 37:40 "And the LORD shall help them, and deliver them: he shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in him."

Psalm 59:2 "1 Deliver me from my enemies, O my God: defend me from them that rise up against me. 2 Deliver me from the workers of iniquity, and save me from bloody men. "

Psalm 106:4-6 " 4 Remember me, O LORD, with the favor that you bore to your people: O visit me with your salvation; 5 That I may see the good of your chosen, that I may rejoice in the gladness of your nation, that I may glory with your inheritance. 6 We have sinned with our fathers, we have committed iniquity, we have done wickedly.

New Testament -

Matthew 1:21 "And she shall bring forth a son, and you shall call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins."

Acts 4:12 "Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name in heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

Hebrews 2:10 "For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings. "

SO WHY DO WE NEED IT?
If you ask most people, they will tell you that their motivation behind being saved is to spend eternity living in some Utopic setting in the clouds living in mansions on gold paved streets. A little further probing will reveal fears that there very well may be a fire and brimstone Hell, and salvation is the only way to avoid an eternity of flames. But salvation is so much more than that. To reduce the humiliation, torture, and brutal death of our Lord Jesus Christ to nothing more than a vehicle for ensuring a comfortable afterlife is well, deplorable.

God created us in his own image (Genesis 1:26-28). We are his people. He created us to live with Him, to interact with Him, to be friends with Him. And if you continue reading Genesis you will find that that was how it was in the beginning, until the fall of Man (Genesis 3:6). It was this first act of sin that expelled us from the Garden of Eden, doomed to toil the earth until, by salvation, we are granted back in.

Every human child born after that was and is born in to sin. It is by default our human nature. In the Old Testament the only way to be cleansed of your sin, and therefore forgiven, one would have to offer a burnt offering to God as outline in the Mosaic laws. In the New Testamet God provides us with the last offering that we would ever need, His only Son, Jesus Christ. All He asks of us is to believe that He loves us that much.

John 3:13-18 "13 And no man has ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: 15 That whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believes on him is not condemned: but he that believes not is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

Verse 18 sums it up pretty clear. If you believe in the name of the only begotten Son of God then you are not condemned, but he that believes not is condemned already.
