“Remember me, Lord when you help your people; include me when you save them.” Psalms 106:4
Tonight is the greatest night for Christians all over. It is the night when a new Passover was celebrated, a night when the supreme covenant of love was exemplified by Jesus.
The Old Testament taught us how the First Passover feast was celebrated as instructed by God to Moses. The way the meat had to be roasted and eaten with bitter herbs and unleavened bread. The people had to eat it quickly, dressed as if for travel with sandals on their feet and stick in hand. God promised He would pass over the houses of those whose door posts were sprinkled with the blood of the Lamb when the angel of death passed through the city.
If we could only place ourselves in the shoes of the Israelites that night and imagine their thoughts at being able to escape the slavery of the Egyptians and be liberated at last. Their eagerness to eat the Passover was reflected in their deep desire for freedom.
Jesus heralded a new Passover night. If we recall the memories of this night two thousand years ago, we will realize the chain of events which took place all in one night. Right from the time that Jesus sighed that His heart was heavy with distress at the thought of leaving His beloved disciples, the horror that awaited Him, the declaration that one of them was going to betray Him, the washing of the disciples feet, the memorable Last Supper, the covenant of Love, the agony in the garden of Gethsemane up to His arrest, denial and trial.
What the Old Testament had prefigured, Jesus won for us by liberating us from the chains of sin and death. We are still celebrating the New Passover every time we commemorate the Lord’s last supper in the form of the Eucharist. And as God had commanded Moses, we too have to be prepared and ready, washed in the blood of the Lamb. Jesus is still calling out to us to remember Him every time we eat the bread and drink the cup, to value the sacrifice of His life, to keep the events of this night alive in our hearts, to wait and watch an hour with Him in prayer. We should always be eager to receive the Lord in the Eucharist and to do all that He did and taught in memory of Him.
History has been handed down to us not just for keeping records but to relive it in the Eucharist where the most shining example of Love is evident. Yes, Love it was that made us and it was Love that saved us. Love was God’s plan when He made man. God’s divine nature is Love.
