Larry Lilly's Letter Wednesday April 20, 2011

Vishal Mangalwadi, from Ireland I believe, wrote an interesting article on the importance of a biblical centered world view in a democratic society. I knew I was in for a good read when the article stated, "Forget the Bible and America will go the way of the first protestant nation-Nazi Germany." When Germany went the way of “higher criticism” Hitler walked in and you know the rest.

Democracy often alludes to the will of the people and this sounds good, but keep in mind one of the grand teachers of government, Plato saw democracy as "one of the worst of all political systems."

"The Emperor Charlemagne ranted, 'And those people should not be listened to who keep saying the voice of the people is the voice of God, since the riotousness of the crowd is always very close to madness. Indeed, the voice of a corrupt people is often the devil's voice.'"

Vishal vented on a biblical work ethic verses the entitlement mentality and then moved on to the Bible being the basis of marriage as we know it with this gem:

“Almost everyone desires a happy marriage, but without the Bible, America cannot even define, let along sustain marriage as one man-one woman, exclusive, and life-long relationship. The West became great because biblical monogamy harnessed sexual energy to build strong families, women, children and men. Human history knows no force other than the Bible that has the capacity to dam sexual energy to build powerful families and nations. Indeed, no non-biblical culture has ever been able to require husbands to 'love your wives' and give them the spiritual resources to do so."

I was especially enthralled with the take on marriage. Years ago I received a call from a man wanting to set up an appointment for marriage counseling. In those I thought counseling couples was the living end. Thus I failed to ask enough questions and the man and the woman came straggling into my office, she was straggling, he was being dragged in and right out of the chute she chimed, "We don't want none of that Bible stuff." Well that left me out, for I had/have no other "stuff."

Like many I shudder to think of where our land will be when the "voice of the people" a voice corrupt to the core due to a diet lacking in the scripture, prevails. Surely Charlemagne's "devil's voice" will be the dominant force of that era.

The Psalmist said it well in Psalms 33:12:

Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance.
