I understand how Moses felt when he stood in front of the burning bush. No, a shrubbery has not burst into flames before me lately. Yet, on Sunday I felt the presence of God and I heard him tell me to do something. Suddenly, I felt extremely inadequate to the task, worrying that I wouldn't do it well, that I'm not the man for the job. No matter how fit you are for a job, when you feel God's presence and his calling to some particular task, whether it be a job, marriage, parenting, or anything else the Lord might have in mind, you feel your inadequacy. Simply standing in God's presence, you know how unworthy you are for the task he has placed before you. But, God, 'I am slow of speech and tongue' (Ex 4:10).

As Christians, we tend to find fault with Moses for his attitude that day. He hesitated to do what God told him to because he felt inadequate. Well, of course he felt inadequate. Anyone with an iota of sense would feel completely inadequate to do much of anything when he stands in the presence of God. Have you ever felt a bit small in the presence of someone much smarter, more athletic, or more attractive than you? Suddenly, you don't feel so proud of any of your good attributes because the presence of someone who has them so abundantly makes your characteristics seem meager by comparison. Well, imagine what it must be like when you have God standing before you. All Moses' training, education, etc., suddenly didn't seem impressive to him. So, he balked and tried to hedge his way out of God's appointed task.

Ah, there lies his mistake. I think it would be pompous of us to assume we wouldn't do the same, but his mistake lay not in feeling unworthy of the task, but of simply trying to get out of it. Of course we're unworthy to do what God wants us to do! That's not the point. The point is that He calls us. It is not to us to decide whether we can do a thing or not, but simply to do it. I hope and pray that I have the strength to do what God has told me to do, that I will not balk and try to get out of it no matter how unfit I feel for the task. May it be the same for you.
