COULD I GO BACK?

Can I go back to days gone by?
Even if I could, would I really try?
Could I go back many years ago,
when I was a child just starting to grow?
My mother’s arms would comfort me,
when monsters in my dreams I’d see.
She’d stand beside me and cheer me on,
and give me a hug when things went wrong.
I know … I know … those days are past,
it’s only the memories I have that last.
The love of my mother is strong in my mind,
she could be firm, yet gentle, and kind.
When I’d do wrong, she would set me straight,
and that seemed to happen nearly every day.
Thank you moms for all you give,
you show your children how to live.
They’ll long remember how much you love,
and they will give thanks to God above.
Could I go back to years gone by?
The answer’s no. But why would I try?
Life isn’t the past, and it’s not tomorrow.
It’s only today with its joys and sorrows.
But on those days when things look black,
I’m tempted to wonder. Could I go back?
