Larry Lilly's Letter Tuesday April 12, 2011

As I mused on the saying of Gertrude Walker yesterday, other thoughts along the same line flooded the pea brain with similar ideas. Today's thought comes from Stephen Pierce who stated:

"Never let what you cannot do stop you from doing what you can do."

Over the course of my life I have wasted too many hours, days and even years pining away over the mountains I could not climb and thereby wasted the time that could have been used to climb the ones I could or to have at least tried to climb those deemed impossible by others or worst of all, myself.

It is usually a serious mistake to accept as fact that you cannot do something worthwhile simply because someone else says so, or you have convinced yourself that due to the fact that you alone of all the humans on the face of the earth were born naked.

Many people in the religious realm accept the idea that they will never be a Billy Graham or Joyce Meyer, therefore the head is cast down, the heart is taken out and because they will not be the "Greatest" they refuse to do what can do well. During the heyday of Billy Sunday a popular song encouraged many a run of the mill preacher to do what God enabled him to do and "Brighten The Corner Where You Are." If you can't preach in the Cathedral, preach in the jail, nursing home or street corner, and thus bring some light to someone. I use the term "Preach," but the principle applies to what you want to do, but do not have the anointing for the world stage, you may have anointing ample for a corner. Brighten it.

Over many years as I looked into the eyes of someone who simply could not do what they wanted in the way fitting the profile of the team, I perceived in the returning look an unspoken, but sure fire statement, "Well, if I can't do what I want then I'm not going to do anything." Or if the thing is performed in a small venue it is done with a sarcastic attitude. The phrase "As unto the Lord" must be the attitude of all efforts for Christ regardless of the stage. With the wrong "attitude" all efforts are pathetic ones at promoting the imagined greatness of self.

Talk about accumulating a life labeled miserable.

Christ taught His immediate disciples and thus all who follow the value of refusing to be a social or church climber when He told the story of attending weddings and trying to find a room or seat of prominence and the assured embarrassment when you are asked to move to a “lower place” and someone takes your desired place. He closed the thought with this warning in Luke 14:11:

For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
