Breaking Through Walls
One may encounter many kinds of walls,
Some made with steel, concrete and mortar.
Foreboding, intimidating and untouchable,
Sky high and impossible to climb over.
Walls are built to keep some from entering,
Lest they steal the treasure contained within.
Those structures are stout, rigid and unyielding,
Their steely appearance cold and grim.
Many seek for safety behind emotional walls,
Built with fragments of hurt and devastation.
Seemingly strong, they’re not without flaw,
Tis not any structure built to perfection.
Hiding behind emotional walls is a wounded soul,
Withdrawn in fear, merely existing.
“I’m not made of stone,” often is told,
“I’m not cold-hearted and unfeeling.”
We busily build strong walls, yet protest,
“I care! My heart still bleeds!”
Dare we admit our soul is not at rest,
Or worse, “Oh Lord, I am in need.”
With hollow cheer, we claim to need no one,
Boasting, “I can make it on my own.”
We ignore past hurt and pretend its gone,
While among people, we remain alone.
Everyone is a fool at some time or other,
But the biggest fool is the one who fools himself.
He believes he must keep his heart under cover,
Afraid to risk loving God and others.
In fear, the walls tighten around our emotions,
Do we dare enter into life’s stream.
Clear your mind from dullness of confusion,
And arise, give praise to God and sing.
Often you hear the birds sing but miss the melody,
You feel the sunshine but it doesn’t warm you.
You see the eagle in flight and long to be free,
Away with the old, and on with the new!
Every strong wall you have built,
Has stolen freedom and made you a prisoner.
The stones you’ve placed like stitches in a quilt,
Are more binding than a man-made structure.
Seven times, Israel marched around the walls of Jericho,
And with a shout, they came tumbling down.
Therefore, God wants you and I to take note,
That one day our walls will tumble to the ground.
Self-enclosed walls stifle the spirit and soul,
You become more bound than the crippled and lame.
Receive God’s love today and be bold,
Giving thanks and praise to His holy name.
We will fear no more but give of ourselves,
For in blessing others, we find true wealth.
Open up to God’s treasures, both great and small,
And allow His love to break through your walls.
