The funny thing is, I used to struggle so much with writer’s block. I stayed so frustrated about it that, for a long time, I guess I almost gave up on writing all together. It always seemed as though it was something I would do in the future. Someday, when the “inspiration” hit me. Then, suddenly I had one of those so-called “AH HA!” moments. I realized I was passing off ideas without even taking time to see what they might become. I guess you could say I finally started listening to myself think!

I decided if a thought felt like it had any life in it at all, I should stop what I was doing and make a note of it. I started doing just that. I wrote enough down so that I could walk away, still thinking about it, and come back later if I had anything to add.

It was amazing! No matter where I was or what I was doing, if even the tiniest spark of an idea crossed my mind, I ran and got my notebook and jotted it down. Sometimes it came like waves and I was actually able to write a complete piece from beginning to end! Other times just a paragraph; maybe two. Then when I came back to it, the words just seemed to flow off the notes I had written.

I am still in shock about the dramatic change! I have a notebook with over fifty ideas for subjects to write on. Every day I add to it. It never fails to supply me with fresh topics each time I go back. And because I take the notes while I am excited and it is fresh in my mind, the same excitement comes back when I return to them.

Another thing I learned was to pay close attention to where my conversations went with people. Was it an interesting conversation? What was the topic? Would it be possible to turn that into a piece that would be of interest to others? Was there a need for information brought out in the exchange that I could research and turn into an informative article?

How about doing a piece on tips for young Moms? I was talking to a new Mom about some things to do to help a new baby sleep longer through the night when it hit me…I raised six kids! Why I am practically an expert! Probably have a lot of information from my own experiences that they would be able to use. You really don’t have to learn everything the hard way like I did! I learned quite a bit along the way that could help them. Why not?

Anyway, my point is: Don’t sell yourself short! Just keep your eyes and ears open! There is more going on around you then you are aware of at the moment. Tune in. Rev up your awareness! Take a minute to write down some of the “stuff” that floats through your mind. Only takes a moment and you have nothing to lose. You just may discover you have more going on in there than you thought you did.

It changed my writing life completely and I finally am becoming the writer I always wanted to be. Excited and productive! That’s what it is all about! Give it a try. I think you just may be in for an encouraging surprise! See you next time. Good luck with your writing!
