Larry Lilly's Letter Wednesday March 30, 2011

I have made a practice of looking for the verses, thoughts and other "secrets" of successful Christians and others for most of my adult life. We all would agree that some form of prayer, a growing knowledge of the area of expertise and tenacity are marks of the outstanding person in any field.

One word with a world of meaning is often omitted by the commentators, but you can bet the farm this word is a huge part of all successful people in any undertaking.

FOCUS.

When common light is focused to the max via laser technology, it can burn a hole in steel, even titanium, or if properly controlled be used as a scalpel for eye surgery.

I came across an acronym for focus last Friday and I really like it as it helps to bring laser like concentration to my thinking and actions.

Follow One Course Until Successful

Simple isn't it. Isaiah stated concerning Christ in Isa 50:7 For the Lord GOD will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed.

Singleness of purpose, focused, committed to an objective and other little statements are designed to help us understand that above average living is the result of focus.

I talked with a man around my age the other day and he whined to me that he felt like such a failure. I asked if he had empirical stats to back up his assertion of personal failure. After a little more questioning I found that as he had lived for nearly 70 years with no idea of what he wanted to achieve in life, he has no way of measuring his life, therefore no idea of success or failure. Of course the fact the spent his life breathing, eating and sleeping with no beckoning star is a bit of evidence of failure. But at what?

The wag asked, "If you didn't know where you wanted to go, how would you know when you arrived?" What about it; do you have a grasp on God's plan for you? It is important.

Philippians 3:13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, 14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

Talk about organized FOCUS.
