Everything seems to be in place. You have a talent and passion for drama ministry. And the leadership in your church is behind you 100 percent.

So why is getting the drama ministry off the ground so hard? Here are a few roadblocks that may be holding you back…

1. You have no goals for the team.

Drama can be a lot of fun. But in order for it to be effective for God’s kingdom, it needs to have purpose. So you need to do some dreaming, planning and goal setting…

=> Develop a mission statement for the drama team. Answering simple questions like “Who are we?” and “Who do we want to reach?” is a great place to start.

=> Create goals from your mission statement. How many sketches or plays do you want to do each year? Where do you want to do them – in church or out in the community? Who do you want to reach with your productions?

As much fun as drama is, it’s important that you and your team regularly focus on the reason you’re doing it in the first place—to serve God and further His kingdom.

2. You have no budget.

Many churches are short on cash, so you may have no choice but to start your drama ministry without any funds. And you can get by without a budget if you need to—just keep your skits simple, with minimal props, costumes and sets.

But eventually, you are going to want to put on bigger productions and will need money to pay for sets, props and costumes. Having a drama budget set up at the beginning can save you a lot of frustration and personal expense.

3. Your entire team is on standby.

There are two ways to create a drama team:

Option A: Develop a team of people who meet regularly to rehearse and improve their acting abilities, or…

Option B: Hold rehearsals only when you have a sketch to perform — pulling actors from a group of interested people.

Obviously, Option A blows the doors off of Option B. When a team meets regularly…

=> You have a reliable pool of talent to pull from.

=> You save time – you’re not recruiting people every time you do a drama.

=> Your actors have a greater commitment to the ministry.

=> You can use non-rehearsal time to train your team with acting games.

=> Your group bonds together as a family.

If you’re just starting out, you may not have enough people willing to commit to a weekly drama meeting. That makes it more difficult to train actors and build rapport in the team, but it still can be done. I recommend keeping a list of available talent and contact information handy to help make the task of recruiting actors and stage crew a bit easier.

Building a strong drama team can be a lot of work. But it’s also one of the most rewarding and powerful ways to serve God.
