Encouragement
'Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.' Psalm 139 v7-8
You are not alone. Whenever you thought you were, He was there. That can be hard to understand, believe me I know, especially when you feel with every atom that no one was there. Sometimes there are not answers. Sometimes the word Why? just bounces off the walls. But He was there. He is here, He never quits, He never walks out.
Last night I got to thinking about Mary. Mother of the Son of God! She is one of the most famous women who ever lived, she got to see angels, a star created just for her Son's birthday, shepherds and Wise Men bowing. She had large parts of the Bible written about her, got to be with Jesus every day for years. She is prayed too and worshiped by millions. And yet. Can you imagine anything more lonely?
Pregnant before marriage - not in those days. Systematically hunted by a powerful, widely feared tyrant. Children killed where you have just been. In a foreign culture, no money, no family. Back to a non-descript town, head down, don't attract attention. Your Son starts to work, He doesn't rest, He is constantly on the road, everyone wants a piece of Him. You want Him safe like He was when you kissed Him goodnight. You don't always understand Him.
People start to talk and point. There is big trouble at the Temple. You go to bed and pray and cry for your little boy. He is arrested by your own people, brutally tortured so you barely recognise Him and sentenced to death for the sake of politics and an uneasy alliance. Your innocent, amazing, beautiful Son. Roughly nailed to a cross like a common criminal, naked and alone. So alone that he cries out to His Father, the One whose love He knows like breath itself:
'Why have you abandoned me?'.But it doesn't end there. Mary is not left alone. While He is on the cross, Jesus hands care of her over to his best friend John. Even in His agony, He remembers hers. He dies and for three days there is only loss. And then He is there, even more alive than before. Now she understands that she will never be alone again.
He accepts our loss at the cross, the loss is His. He accepts our pain at the cross, the pain is His. And you know what? He is here, He never quits, He never walks out. He does amazing things with lonely people. It's not over yet...
