Mother’s Day

The idea for Mother’s Day was born in a small Methodist church in Grafton, West Virginia. The year was 1876 eleven years following the official end of the costliest, bloodiest war in American history—the American Civil War of 1861-1865 wherein nearly a million men and women died and nearly two million injured.
While teaching a Memorial Day lesson to her Sunday school class, Mrs. Anna Reeves Jarvis prayed for all of the mothers who had experienced the death of a son. She prayed that one day there would be a “Memorial Day” for mothers. The prayer made a deep impression on one of Mrs. Jarvis eleven children also named Anna. Young Anna had observed her mother’s efforts to bring her war divided country, community and church together. As she grew to adulthood, the younger woman carried her mother’s prayers, efforts and dreams in her heart. On the day of her mother’s death, Anna was determined to establish a Mother’s Day in her memory and honor.
On May 12, 1907, a local observance was held in Grafton with mothers of Confederate and Union soldiers honored. News of the observance quickly spread to the Philadelphia area. By 1909, Mother’s Day was celebrated in forty-five states, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Canada and Mexico. Miss Anna Jarvis was elated by the speed this special day for mothers was accepted by the nation.
On May 8, 1914, as war loomed over the United States and the rest of the world, President Woodrow Wilson designated the second Sunday in May as “Mother’s Day” to be a day of prayer to Almighty God for His goodness and Providence, for the displaying of the American flag, and reverence for the mothers of the United States and their awesome task of the oldest professional of humankind—motherhood.
Therefore, let ALL people regardless of religion, faith and belief say a prayer of thanks and honor to Almighty God for Anna Jarvis who for thirty years kept her mother’s prayer and dream alive. Then let us turn and give thanks and honor to the woman who gave us birth and life and, in most cases, nurtured us to where we are today. If she did not or was unable to nurture you, forgive, give thanks and honor her for your life in this era of impulsive, spontaneous world to rid the world of the unborn for just because… If the woman who nurtured you did not give birth to you but dedicated her time, talent, monetary and emotional treasures to you, give praise and honor to her who has the unconditional love of a birth mother. And let us this Mother’s Day remember those mothers whose daughters and sons have made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of this nation, freedom and liberties that we all have. Let their sacrifices never, ever be overlooked or forgotten! BLESSED AND HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY TO EACH AND EVERY MOTHER!
