Larry Lilly's Letter Monday March 21, 2011

An old friend sent a piece to me designed to get a laugh and at first glance it does accomplish this. However on further thought it brought a sense of sadness to me and so considering a number of things I will share it with you and see if the Lord will have me bring a chuckle, a sense of sadness and a feeling of inspirational trust to you, all in the same article.

"Hoping to shock my husband into finally listening to me on the eve of our 50th wedding anniversary, I very quietly said to him, 'I'm having an affair.' He turned to me and asked, 'Are you having it catered?' And that my friend is the definition of old."

As I near the 47th anniversary of the wedding of the Great Blonde and I, I actually find little comfort in this definition of old. I only laughed at for a brief 37 minutes and then I started thinking.

Thinking has been known to be dangerous when I engage in this ancient exercise, so I have mused for over three days, in the hopes that I might experience a resurrection of sanity and thus write on something else. No resurrection, so here goes.

Could it be that our dear "old" hubby is the expression of the rock solid trust, this trust coming from the well spring of true love mentioned in 1Co 13:5:

"Love" Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;

We are told in the context of the above to pray for this kind of love for each other as it is the kind of love Christ has for us, and though He knows us through and through, He does not sit around heaven "thinking evil" of us.

When humans in any relationship do not have trust for one another, fear reigns and biblically speaking "fear hath torment."

Hardly a week goes by but that I read of or am involved in counseling someone who is suffering the pain of the break-up of a long marriage. As this type of crisis seems to be becoming more and more a part of daily living, many are living with a nagging fear that it could happen to them.

It is very important for the people of Christ to really work on trusting our mate as the eye grows dim, the hair grey (If there is any left) and find words and actions of comfort and to pray for the more excellent gift of love as defined in 1Corinthians 13.

I do all I can to communicate trust to the wife of my youth by giving such assurances that if she can come back to the place in her sweet little heart of loving me more than she loves the grandchildren, everything will be fine. Trust, is the word for today.
